2012 OSFFC Educational Seminar

Jan 15, 2012 (20:17:00)

On January 9th and 10th, seventeen Local 1660 members from at least four different shops attended this year's Oregon State Fire Fighters Council Educational Seminar. The Hilton Hotel in Eugene, OR was the sight of this years event which included visits and political updates from Oregon Representative Greg Matthews and US Senator Jeff Merkley. Members were given a question and answer opportunity with both of these key political figures. Several classes were also taught by the IAFF PEP Instructors, including our very own President Rocky Hanes. Classes included Writing Gooder, Line of Duty Deaths and Injury Investigations, Intro to Grievances, Recruiting and Endorsing Candidates, and Organizing and Implementing a Community Outreach Program.

Local 1660 member Jeff Miller gave all in attendance a well received update on TVFR's Fire Gas Study. An update on current Cancer Presumption litigation and PERS litigation was given by Attorneys Hall and Hartman.

This was a great opportunity to recieve some solid education from the IAFF. The event is held every year and anybody from Local 1660 who has a desire to continue their Labor education is encouraged to attend.

Local 1660 Interviews Candidates for CD 1 Race

Jan 04, 2012 (17:04:00)

Local 1660 Interviews Candidates for CD 1 Race

On January 31, 2012 there will be a special election and voters in the 1st Congressional District will select a new representative to the United States Congress.

Today, in separate interviews, the Republican and the Democratic nominees were each given an opportunity to win the endorsement and the support of the Oregon State Fire Fighters Council.

Republican candidate Rob Cornilles, a businessman from Tualatin and Democrat candidate Suzanne Bonamici, an Oregon State Senator from Beaverton were welcomed at the Union Hall by 1660 President Rocky Hanes, other 1660 members, as well as, Oregon State Firefighters Council President Kelly Bach and OSFFC Legislative Director Bob Livingston.

Each candidate was asked the same set of 11 questions. The questions were designed to reveal how the candidate might vote on the issues that firefighters care most about. Both candidates were polite, professional, candid and appreciative of the opportunity to win our endorsement. The endorsement will come after a vote of the OSFFC Executive Board which will take place in the very near future.

This is an important election that will likely be very close. Once we endorse a candidate it will be essential for our members to rally around him or her and do what is necessary to make sure that “our candidate” wins this race.
